Frequently asked questions

Can you help if we are not an existing customer?

Yes. We take on emergency work for businesses that have never worked with us before, including those whose usual IT provider is unavailable or unable to help. Call us, explain the situation, and we will tell you honestly whether and how quickly we can assist.

How quickly can you respond to an IT emergency?

Remote investigation typically begins within the hour during business hours, subject to engineer availability, and most emergencies can be triaged remotely. Where on-site attendance is needed, we agree an arrival time on the call. The faster you contact us after an incident starts, the more options we have.

We have been hit by ransomware. What should we do first?

Disconnect affected machines from the network and WiFi immediately, do not switch them off, do not pay anything, and call us. We will help you contain the spread, assess what has been affected, establish whether clean backups exist and plan the recovery, including any reporting obligations to the ICO or your insurer.

Our server or email is down. Can you fix it remotely?

Very often, yes. Most server, Microsoft 365 and email problems can be diagnosed and resolved remotely once we have access. If hardware has physically failed we will talk you through immediate options on the phone and arrange on-site attendance or replacement equipment as needed.

How much does emergency IT support cost?

Emergency work is charged at an agreed hourly rate with a clear estimate before we start, so you always know what you are committing to. There is no call-out charge for the initial phone assessment. Many businesses move onto a support contract afterwards, which covers this kind of incident as standard.

Can you stop this happening again?

Yes. Once the immediate emergency is resolved we provide a plain-English report on what caused it and what would prevent a repeat, from backup improvements to security hardening. There is no obligation, but most emergencies are preventable with the right precautions in place.

What counts as an IT emergency?

An IT emergency is any technology failure that stops your business operating: a server that will not start, ransomware encrypting your files, email down across the company, a network outage taking your tills or phones offline, or a compromised account sending fraudulent invoices to your customers. The common thread is urgency; every hour of downtime costs money, damages customer confidence and, in the case of active cyber incidents, allows more harm to occur.

The right response in the first hour makes an enormous difference. In a ransomware incident, disconnecting affected machines quickly can be the difference between losing one PC and losing every server. In a hardware failure, avoiding repeated restart attempts can be the difference between recoverable and unrecoverable data. That is why our emergency process starts with a free phone assessment: we help you take the right immediate steps before any paid work begins.

Emergency IT support without a contract

Most IT providers only prioritise their own contracted clients, which leaves businesses without a support contract, or whose provider cannot cope, with nowhere to turn. We deliberately keep capacity for emergency work from new clients. You do not need an existing relationship with us; you need a problem we can fix, and a willingness to give our engineers the access they need to fix it.

Emergency work is charged at an agreed hourly rate with an estimate up front, so you stay in control of cost even in a crisis. Once systems are restored, we produce a short report explaining what happened and what would prevent it happening again. Some businesses take that report and act on it themselves; many choose to move onto one of our managed support agreements, where monitoring, patching, tested backups and rapid response are included as standard and most of the emergencies we see simply do not occur.

Prevention: the cheapest emergency is the one that never happens

Almost every emergency we attend has a preventable cause: backups that were never tested, servers running years of missed updates, a single point of failure nobody had noticed, or users without multi-factor authentication on their email. Modern managed IT support addresses all of these continuously, with monitoring that spots failing hardware before it dies, patching that closes vulnerabilities before they are exploited, and tested backups that turn a potential disaster into an inconvenience. If your business has just had a near miss, it is the ideal moment to put proper protection in place, and we can help with that as a Cyber Essentials certified provider supporting organisations across the UK.
