Every few years a new WiFi standard arrives, hardware vendors relabel their ranges, and businesses are left wondering whether the WiFi they installed a couple of years ago is suddenly out of date. WiFi 7 is the current headline, and it is genuinely faster than WiFi 6. Whether that speed changes anything for your office is a separate question.
This guide explains what changed between the standards, when an upgrade is worth the money, and a point that causes more real-world WiFi complaints than any standard: the difference between an access point and a router.
The short answer
WiFi 6 (and WiFi 6E) is still the right choice for most business installations in 2026. It is mature, well supported by client devices, and more than fast enough for typical office workloads.
WiFi 7 is worth specifying when you are buying new anyway, or when you have a specific problem it solves: very high device density, large file transfers over wireless, or bandwidth-heavy applications competing on the same network. Paying to rip out working WiFi 6 access points purely to reach WiFi 7 is rarely justified on its own.
The standard on the box is not what determines whether your WiFi feels good. Coverage, access point placement, the number of access points and how they are configured matter far more than the generation number.
What actually changed
Each generation of WiFi adds capacity and efficiency rather than simply "more speed". The practical improvements are what matter.
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) was the big shift. Its headline feature was not peak speed but how it handles many devices at once. Technologies like OFDMA and improved MU-MIMO let an access point serve more clients efficiently, which is exactly the problem busy offices have. WiFi 6 works on the established 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
WiFi 6E is WiFi 6 extended into the 6GHz band. That extra band is a large stretch of clean spectrum with far less interference from older devices and neighbouring networks. For dense environments, 6E often delivers a bigger real-world improvement than moving to WiFi 7 on congested bands.
WiFi 7 (802.11be) builds on the 6GHz foundation with wider channels, higher-order modulation and Multi-Link Operation, which lets a device use more than one band simultaneously for more throughput and lower latency. The peak figures are impressive, but you only see them with WiFi 7 client devices and a network designed to take advantage of them.
The pattern is consistent: the standards keep getting better at handling many devices and heavy load, not just at posting a bigger single-device number.
Is a WiFi 7 upgrade worth it?
Ask what problem you are trying to solve before looking at the standard.
Upgrade is likely worth it when:
- You are refreshing ageing access points anyway, so the incremental cost of WiFi 7 capable hardware is small.
- You have genuine device density, such as open-plan offices, classrooms or event spaces where many clients compete for airtime.
- You move large files over wireless routinely, for example media, design or engineering workloads.
- You are cabling a new fit-out and want the installation to stay current for its full lifespan.
Upgrade is usually not worth it when:
- Your existing WiFi 6 or 6E access points are performing well and coverage is good.
- Your bottleneck is your internet connection, not the wireless, which is very common.
- Most of your client devices are older and cannot use WiFi 7 features anyway.
- The real complaint is dead spots or dropouts, which is a coverage and placement problem no standard fixes on its own.
That last point is the one worth dwelling on. If people complain about WiFi, the cause is far more often too few access points, poor placement or a saturated internet line than an out-of-date standard.
Access point vs router: the distinction that matters
A great deal of business WiFi frustration comes from treating the network like a home setup, where a single box does everything. In a business network the roles are separate, and understanding that is what makes coverage predictable.
A router directs traffic between networks, most importantly between your local network and the internet. It handles addressing, routing and usually the firewall. A router's job is not to blanket a building in wireless signal.
A wireless access point is a device whose job is to provide WiFi coverage. It connects back to the wired network, usually over a single cable that also powers it via Power over Ethernet, and broadcasts the wireless signal to devices in its area.
In a home, one product combines router, switch and access point because the space is small. In an office, one device cannot cover the whole floor plate reliably, so you deploy multiple access points cabled back to a central switch and router. Devices roam between them as people move around.
This is why "buy a faster router" almost never fixes office WiFi. The router is not what is struggling; the coverage provided by too few access points is. Getting the number and placement of access points right is the single most effective thing you can do for business WiFi quality, ahead of choosing WiFi 6 versus WiFi 7.
How many access points do you need?
There is no universal number, because it depends on the building rather than the floor area alone. The variables that matter are construction (solid walls and steel attenuate signal far more than plasterboard), the number of concurrent devices, and the applications in use.
As a rough guide, a coverage-only environment needs fewer access points than a high-density one serving the same square footage, because density is about airtime and client count, not just signal reach. The reliable way to get this right is a wireless survey that accounts for the actual layout and materials, rather than estimating from a floor plan. Under-provisioning to save on hardware is the most common cause of WiFi that tests fine when empty and falls over when the office is full.
Getting a business WiFi setup right
Whatever standard you choose, the fundamentals decide the outcome:
- Cabling. Access points need structured cabling back to a switch, with enough capacity and PoE to power them. Wireless quality rests on a wired foundation.
- Placement. Access points belong where the people and devices are, not wherever a cable happened to reach.
- Channel planning. Neighbouring access points on the same channels interfere. This is configured, not automatic to get right in dense sites.
- Roaming. Devices should move between access points cleanly, without dropping connections in corridors or stairwells.
- Management. Business access points are managed centrally, so configuration, monitoring and firmware are handled across the whole estate rather than device by device.
Get those right on WiFi 6 and you will have better WiFi than a poorly designed WiFi 7 deployment.
